Plans were mooted 10 years ago when changes to the feed in tariff (the price paid for electric sold to the national grid) rendered the project unviable. The town council intends to spend £30,000 on a feasibility study for the project.

Plans have now been submitted for the North West Relief Road, and if approved cars could be driving down it in just 2 years. The plans have been in the making for 30 years now, and planners are eager to have the plans approved, although they have met with criticism stating it is an out of date solution. The plans for the road hope to reduce traffic on the centres Smithfield Road by 30 percent, and it is expected to cost £87.1 million.
